Building Community Engagement in the Pacific

Written by By Group | Oct 6, 2026, 2:17:04 AM

At BY Group, we are dedicated to supporting the communities where we operate. We take pride in partnering with, sponsoring and actively engaging with various Indigenous organisations, local sports teams and community programs, both in Australia and across the Pacific.

Learn more about the recent opportunities our team has had to build community in the Pacific with our partners.

Training & Development Programs with Hatanga

Through our ongoing partnership with Hatanga, we are proud to continue developing Pacific capability through ongoing training programs.

Taking Training on the Road with our Training Trailer

A key focus of our partnership with Hatanga is creating employment and training opportunities for Indigenous peoples from Australia and the Solomon Islands. Our Safety Training Trailer helps bring these opportunities directly to project sites and communities, providing a mobile space for workforce development, mentoring and practical skills training.

Working at Heights Safety Training with Hatanga

Earlier this year, our Safety and Compliance Manager Michael Allison led a comprehensive Working at Heights Safety Training session for the members of the Saints of Melanesia Building site team in Honiara. This was a vital and timely activity before roof steel and sheeting works kicked off on site. The hands-on session focused on critical safety elements, including:

  • Harness Selection & Fit: Ensuring the right gear is used correctly.
  • Lanyard Systems: Understanding proper deployment and mechanics.
  • Hazard Awareness: Identifying and mitigating risks before starting work.
  • Practical Exercises: Real-world drills to reinforce safe on-site procedures.

Women for Change Workshop

Our team was proud to participate in the Women for Change Workshop run by the Fatulei Association in Funafuti, Tuvalu. The event was arranged and funded by BY Group and GHD (PMCA) as part of the broader PMSP Tuvalu Wharf and Workshop Project, demonstrating Australia’s enduring partnership with Tuvalu. The session focused on women's rights, gender equality and gender justice, helping to raise awareness and support efforts to end violence against women and children across Tuvalu and the broader Pacific region..

We thank the teams at GHD, Hatanga, TCS, TEC (Tuvalu Electricity Corporation), Tuvalu Public Works Department and the Australian High Commission, and the local Tuvaluan workers for their participation and support. The raised hand shown in the group photo is a symbol of the commitment to stop violence against women and children.

Tuvalu U18s Rugby 7s Team Sponsorship

BY Group is a proud sponsor of the Tuvalu Rugby Union U18 National Rugby 7's team. The team finished fourth overall in their recent tournament, winning against Wallis and Futuna in the opening match and delivering strong performances against both Samoa and the Solomon Islands. A great effort, well done team!

Community Spirit from Mark West & Manly Brothers Junior Rugby Club

Outside of his role as Construction Manager at BY Group, Mark West is President of the Manly Brothers Rugby League Club. On a recent work trip to Tuvalu, Mark brought along some training t-shirts the club no longer needed. Each afternoon, hundreds of the locals in Tuvalu gather on the airport runway to strike up games of Volleyball, Soccer and Rugby. The team was swarmed with very enthusiastic and appreciative kids when they opened up the boxes and the shirts were gone in seconds!
